Step 3: Immediate Board-Up and Roof-Tarp Service (if needed)

In many fire damage cases, it’s necessary to board up missing windows and walls and to place tarps on a damaged roof. This helps to maintain security and to prevent further damage from outside of the property.

Step 4: Water Removal and Drying (if water damage is present)

The water removal process begins almost immediately and removes the majority of the water. We then use dehumidifiers and air movers to remove the remaining water and complete the drying process.

Step 5: Removal of Smoke and Soot from All Surfaces

We use specialized equipment and techniques to remove smoke and soot from ceilings, walls, and other surfaces.

Step 6: Cleaning and Sanitizing

Any restorable items will be cleaned and sanitized. We’ll use a variety of specialized content cleaning techniques to restore your belongings to pre-fire condition. Our professionals will also perform smoke odor removal services in NJ using advanced air scrubbing equipment and fogging devices with deodorizers.

Step 7: Restoration

Restoration is the process of restoring your home or business to its pre-fire condition. Restoration may involve relatively minor repairs, such as replacing drywall and painting, or it could include significant reconstruction of entire rooms.

Importance of Containment During Mold Removal in Florham Park, NJ

10/12/2021 (Permalink)

Above is a negative air chamber set up within mold containment in a basement that had mold in Florham Park.

When your home or business needs mold removal in Florham Park, NJ, you want to make sure that the job is done right. When it isn’t, it’s likely for mold to reoccur or even spread to other areas of your property.

Perhaps one of the most important steps in the mold remediation process is setting up proper mold containment before the process is started. Here, we will review why containment is so important for proper mold remediation in Florham Park, NJ.

What is Mold Containment?

Mold containment refers to setting up proper containment to isolate the areas being worked in from the rest of your home or business during mold remediation.

This is essential to prevent cross-contamination between clean, unaffected areas of the building and where mold remediation is being performed.

When mold removal services in Florham Park are being performed, mold spores may become disturbed and easily spread to other areas through the air. This is especially true if your mold project includes some sort of demolition, such as removing mold-affected drywall or carpeting.

So, if proper mold containment isn’t set up, it’s likely that mold may spread to previously unaffected areas of your home - Negating the effects of mold remediation.

Negative Air Chambers

Mold containment is not only used to prevent the spread of mold spores to other parts of your property. Containment is also used to help filter mold particles from the air and ensure safe indoor air quality through the use of negative air chambers.

A negative air chamber is an advanced remediation method which entails setting up HEPA air filters within the contained area which blow out filtered air into a sealed exhaust system outside of the contained area.

In simple terms, the air within the containment chamber is sucked into the HEPA filter and expelled outside of the containment area, most times outside of the home.

This creates a ‘negative air’ effect, which helps to prevent the spread of contaminants to other parts of your home, while also removing mold spores from the affected area.

With over 15 years of experience, you can trust that SERVPRO of Morristown properly performs each step in the remediation process in your home or business.

Water Damage Ceiling Repair Services in New Jersey

3/2/2021 (Permalink)

When your ceiling leaks and you need water damage restoration services in New Jersey, SERVPRO of Morristown is Here to Help.

When your ceiling leaks, it can be caused by many different things, such as ice damming, roof leaks, plumbing issues, or burst pipes. Whatever the source of your ceiling water damage, immediate action should be taken to prevent extensive damages in your New Jersey home. When you don't promptly repair ceiling water damage, the ceiling may begin to sag or in extreme cases, cave in.

SERVPRO of Morristown is your local ceiling repair water damage company in New Jersey

As water damage specialists, SERVPRO of Morristown can quickly provide ceiling repair for water damage in your Morris County, New Jersey home. We work hard to make any disaster "Like it never even happened."

Repairing A Water Damaged Ceiling

When there's water stains and paint bubbles inside your home from ceiling leaks, there are three main steps you need to take to repair your damages.

Find the Source of the Leak

Before you can repair the water damaged ceiling, you have to stop the source of your leak. If you don't, any cleanup efforts you make will be ruined.

When looking for the source of the ceiling leak in your New Jersey home, first inspect the room above it. Look for leaking pipes, bathroom fixtures, windows, or even a leaky roof. If you cannot find the source, then you'll need to open up a portion of the ceiling to investigate further. Closely inspect all pipes for signs of water leaks and note where building materials have been affected by water to find the source.

Once you've found the source of your ceiling leak, take steps to temporarily stop it or have it repaired. If your ceiling leaks during rain and you cannot stop it, set up buckets, pots, and towels to catch water until the rain stops and help arrives.

Dry Out The Ceiling

When drying out a water damaged ceiling after a leak, it can be as simple as pointing fans at the damaged area or as complicated as removing large portions of damaged drywall ceiling. The extent of the drying process is dependent on how long the leak was active, how much of the ceiling has been affected, and whether or not other building materials have been damaged by water as well.

If you're dealing with a large water bubble on the ceiling, before doing anything else you should drain it into a large bucket. You can do this by poking a small hole in the bubble, positioned directly over the bucket. This allows you to control the flow of water rather than the ceiling bubble exploding and flooding the room.

When drying out the ceiling, point fans directly at wet areas and set up dehumidifiers nearby. You should leave this equipment for at least three days before removing it. If the ceiling is still wet, you may need to remove a portion or call a professional water damage company in New Jersey to finish the drying process.

Repair the Ceiling

Once the ceiling is dry, you can move on to making any needed repairs. You may need to prime and paint over peeling paint and water stains, fill patches with joint compound, or replace removed portions of the ceiling.

To replace ceiling drywall, measure the existing hole and cut out a new piece of drywall that is two inches larger than the hole. Hold the new piece up to the hole and trim it to the proper size with a utility knife. Add joint compound to the edges of the hole and insert the new piece into it, smoothing down the joint compound with a putty knife. Once it has dried, you can sand it down.

Ceiling Repair Water Damage Frequently Asked Questions

How can you tell a ceiling has water damage?

There are many different signs of water damage on ceilings. The most common include:

  • Water bubbles
  • Bubbling or peeling paint
  • Water stains
  • Active leaks
  • Sagging ceiling
  • Mold on ceiling

Can you paint over a water damaged ceiling?

If the ceiling is still wet or has mold on it, you should absolutely not just paint over the water damage. This will only cause your issue to become worse over time. The only case where you can paint over ceiling water damage is after it is completely dry.

Do you have to remove and replace ceilings after water damage?

Depending on the extent of your damages and whether or not you called a professional, the need to completely remove and replace a ceiling after water damage is a 'it depends' scenario. Many times, professional water damage companies can dry out your ceiling with minimal removal, making it so that you do not have to replace the ceiling except for a small portion. Times where you would have to replace the ceiling are when it is completely covered in mold or is collapsing.

Who pays to clean up a crime scene?

If you aren't sure about your situation, call your insurance company and inquire about coverage.

How much does biohazard cleanup cost in New Jersey?

The average cost for a biohazard cleanup ranges from $3,000-$5,000, but is completely dependent on the extent of damages, type of hazard material, and what building materials have been affected by the biohazard.

Mitigation Vs Restoration - What's The Difference?

1/11/2021 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Morristown is your local water damage mitigation and restoration company in New Jersey.

When you experience flooding or water leaks in New Jersey, you'll likely contact a water damage company like SERVPRO of Morristown to handle the damages. But, you may not know much about what they actually do. Here, we will go over the differences in water mitigation and water restoration to help you understand the water damage process.

What Is Water Mitigation?

Water mitigation is the first step in the water damage process, and is simply preventing further damages to your property. Mitigation companies will take steps to minimize your loss and are most effective when called in immediately after damages have occurred.

Water damage mitigation efforts include:

  • Removing all wet furniture
  • Water extraction
  • Removing damaged materials such as drywall, flooring, or ceilings
  • Ensuring the building's structural integrity
  • Cleaning & sanitizing to prevent spread of mold or bacteria
  • Start the drying process with commercial grade air movers, dehumidifiers, or floor mats
  • Boarding up of any windows or applying tarps to prevent further water damage as needed

The mitigation process does not take long, and is usually completed during the initial emergency services for your property. When completed immediately after your loss has occurred, mitigation measures can significantly cut down on the amount of restoration needed.

For example, removing standing water within hours after flooding occurs will prevent water seeping into subfloors or ceilings. With this fast action, carpets or even hardwood floors will sustain less damage and be more likely to be restored. Rapid water mitigation efforts also prevent mold, which can begin to grow in as little as 48 hours after water damage.

What Is Water Restoration?

Water restoration follows mitigation, and refers to repairing and restoring your property of water damage. The restoration process takes more time than mitigation. This is because the purpose is to return your home or business to pre-damage conditions.

Water damage restoration services include:

  • Replacing damaged walls, ceilings, or flooring
  • Mold remediation if needed
  • Performing moisture testing to ensure the issue is resolved

Water restoration companies repair and reconstruct your property with an emphasis on the consequences of water damage. This may overlap with a construction company if your home needs a kitchen or bathroom rebuild following major water damage.

Common Questions

Isn't it more cost effective to just replace than to mitigate and restore?

No, it is not. In most cases it costs less to have a water damage company clean & salvage damaged materials than replace them. Well experienced restoration companies know what must be replaced and what can be salvaged. Many times, they may try to salvage materials before deciding to replace, making water mitigation and restoration more cost effective.

Are mitigation and restoration companies the same?

Most of the time mitigation and restoration is performed by the same water damage company. There are companies that specialize in just one or the other. However, it is usually best to use a company that provides complete water damage services to ensure the process is completed properly and in a timely manner.

If I just remove wet materials myself, floors, ceilings, or interior structures will dry themselves.

No, this is not correct. Drying equipment is needed to ensure no moisture is left behind in your property. The detection equipment that restoration professionals use also ensures that all water affected areas are addressed and completely dried. Not taking these steps can result in structural issues and mold growth over time.

Having a fire sprinkler system is required and extremely important for any commercial building. Sprinkler systems in apartment buildings, restaurants, and shopping centers undoubtedly help minimize damages and save lives when a fire strikes.

While providing protection during a fire emergency, commercial sprinkler systems can also cause a huge amount of flooding and water damage to your building once triggered. Commercial property owners should be informed on what they should do when their fire sprinkler system causes a flood to act fast against water damage.

Causes of Fire Sprinkler Flooding

  • A fire. It's fairly obvious that a fire would cause your sprinkler system to go off and flood your warehouse or other commercial property. In these cases, the sprinklers going off isn’t a bad thing - but you will need to handle the flood cleanup afterwards. A single fire sprinkler will pour out between 15 and 25 gallons of water per minute when triggered! By time the sprinklers have been turned off, it's likely they have flooded the building.
  • System failures. Though not very common, your fire sprinkler system can malfunction and go off when it is not supposed to, causing flood waters to cover your commercial property. This is more likely to happen when the system is being tested and is accidentally triggered. If heating sources are installed too close to sprinkler valves, it may accidentally trigger them as well by mistaking it as the heat of a fire.
  • Corrosion or bursting. Sprinkler systems may also flood commercial properties when the pipes are old, rusted, or corroded. Over time, the pipes begin to leak and will eventually give way to a full flood. Sprinkler pipes are also susceptible to bursting from extreme heat or cold. In the winter pipes near exterior walls may freeze, expand, and cause the system to burst.

What To Do When Fire Sprinklers Cause Water Damage

When fire sprinklers are discharged, they saturate walls, floors, and any furniture below them. You will have to act fast in your flooded commercial property to ensure mold does not begin to grow and spread.

| Stop the water source. If the sprinkler system went off because of an actual fire in the building, you will have to wait for the fire department to arrive, handle the situation, and tell you it is safe to reenter the building. If the sprinklers were accidentally discharged, turn them off as soon as possible.

| Call a water damage restoration company. The flood damage that results from sprinklers discharging is more than you can handle yourself. Flood cleanup companies are equipped with water extractors, commercial grade fans & dehumidifiers, and have the expertise necessary to ensure mold does not grow in your property. A commercial cleanup company will do the following:

  • Remove water damaged items.
  • Remove all standing water.
  • Completely dry all affected areas; including carpets, walls, floors, and ceilings.
  • Spray antimicrobial or other disinfectants to ensure there is no mold growth or bacteria left behind.
  • Repair any damaged or demolished areas.

| Call your commercial insurance company. The damages resulting from fire sprinklers discharging will almost always be covered by your insurance policy. The water restoration company should be able to bill your insurance company directly and hopefully require no out of pocket costs from you. Document damages to be sure your insurance company covers the repairs and restoration.
